A strange day in July

Hazel

My brother and I are twins and we do everything. We tell each other all of our secrets; at least I thought so until today when the truth hit me so fast and strong it’s a wonder I didn’t see it before.

Mother had to come and wake me up today, which is strange as I normally wake up at 7-o’clock sharp no later. The bright red numbers on the small screen of my alarm clock read 8:57. I looked across to my brother’s bed. It was empty. Hugo normally wakes up at 9-o’clock however if he wasn’t here I knew exactly where he would be.

Hardly daring to make a sound I clambered as silently as I could down the darkened rocks. I could see that Hugo was bent double peering at a small pile of stones perfect for skimming. Suddenly I fell, coming crashing down to earth. “Hazel, are you okay?” hearing Hugo’s soft gentle voice gave me a sudden spur of energy.

Skimming stones is my favorite sport activity ever despite the fact that I’m a girly girl who (to be honest) is a posh totty. Every day I wear a dress, usually pink and frilly, and probably the reason why I fell earlier. Hugo let me skim the first two stones, the first skipped about 5m however the second went further by 5 more meters (I was actually quite chuffed by that). Letting my twin take the last stone I noticed his hands were fidgeting with the it. Finally he throws the stone with all his might but the third stone came skipping back.

My brother is a wizard and he will soon go off to a wizard boarding school a thousand miles away. He got the letter last week but didn’t tell me. I will miss him like crazy but there is nothing I can do.

Hugo

Last week I received a letter telling me I was a wizard. It was a total shock. I realized that I may be a bit behind so I’ve been practicing in secret. Away from Hazel. A secret from Hazel…

I woke up at 7:00 2 hours earlier than normal so I slipped out as quickly and quietly as possible trying not to slip down the wet rocks; there had been a storm throughout the night. The storm had blown away by the morning and the sea was calm as could be.

Scurrying about the beach I couldn’t find a single stone that would be good for skimming so I bent double and thought about three perfect skimming stones one on top of the other. When I opened my eyes they were there. Five minutes passed before anything happened. I heard a thud behind me; Hazel was sprawled on the ground.

Leading Hazel across to the pile of stones I told her that she could take the first two. Finally it was my turn I throw the stone but it came back with six letters on: DANGER…;

Aside

He stopped. He cautiously looked around and picked up 3 stones. After successfully throwing the first two stones, he found it a surprise that the third one came bouncing back again.

Strange day in July

One happy day in July turned into one strange day in July for me at the beach. As I threw my last stone I  felt  something wasn’t right because I saw a small fairy doll left on the beach was looking at me with a scary glare.I ran back home to see noone was there. DESERTED. Screaming in fear I jumped on to my bed waiting for my death. Then the moment came…

The Piano

On the subject of mystery and stories without many words (Harris Burdick), the piano  keeps the theme going nicely. With no words and no pages, The Piano is a clever animation

Strange Day in July

The stone skimmed across the water; it was the perfect stone for the job, smooth and flat, and I was right in thinking it would go far. But it didn’t stop there. It came back and flipped over, and there, written in blood, was the word RUN. Of course I was petrified, and I ran into the cafe next to the lake, but it was deserted. Then I heard a noise. It was like the sounds of the aliens on TV programmes, just like it, and for a moment I thought they were real, but I said out loud no, they aren’t real. Those were my last words.

The day everything changed…

Sun shone down onto the soft sand and beads of sweat rolled down the cheeks of a young boy. The day grew shorter and shorter as the sun grew weary and slowly sunk into the horizon. A strange girl appeared in the shadows giggling as the boy tried with all his might to skim the smooth pebbles along the rough surface of the never ending sea. Anger filled his body, like a pot bubbling over and not giving it a second thought he threw with all his might, but the third stone came skipping back…

Strange day in july

I particularly like this one because it leaves mysery and question and I like a good mystery ending sentence made by Ollie and James B

Strange day in July…

His jaw dropped as if he had seen a ghost. No, but that wasn’t the case. “Stones,” he thought, ” Do not come back to you when you skim them.” What was this? Why would such a normal day in July cause them such a stir? And why was this happening?
